More or less an updating of a book Sutherland co-wrote in the early 1960s, in the wake of "Kim" Philby's defection to the USSR; the update being triggered by the revelation of Sir Anthony Blunt as the "Fourth Man" in the group of Cambridge University-educated spies recruited by the KGB's predecessors. I didn't find the book to be terribly focused; a lot of it is a simple recapitulation of the case. Sutherland doesn't appear to think much of Blunt's contributions to espionage; nor Burgess' show more for the matter. Good for outlining the case, but not much more, I think. show less
An excellent description of the life of a gentleman's child from nanny to prep, to public, to uni.
The rich really are different from you and I.
This slender volume is the companion to THE ENGLISH GENTLEMAN. Larded with amusing cartoons, one learns about what makes up the English gentleman's wife from money, men, marriage and motherhood. A must read for any Nancy Mitford fan
The unveiling of how the Queens keeperbofvportraits, who hug thick gilded framed paintings capable of secreting transmitters in the room where British Prime Ministers briefed the Queen on issues. Some things remain unsaid. He was the fourth member of that academic circle that served in British intelligence in the 1940s and1940 and after.
