I had Dr. Kolb for Confessions II at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis and always felt I was trying to fill a water glass from a fire hydrant. Here is a great refresher on the wonders of the catechism and what we can emphasize for our adults and young people as we teach them. And I'll bet you'll find something you hadn't thought about. He does a great job of presenting a lot of information quickly in a clear and entertaining way.
The Kolb/Wengert edition of the Book of Concord is a wealth of scholarly material. The footnotes are exhaustive and the historical introduction outstanding. The only real blemish on this otherwise wonderful work is the annoying habit of using "gender inclusive" language. It makes the translation itself slightly suspect, and certainly does not flow as well as it could.
Anything Dr. Kolb writes is worth reading. Well written, entertaining and exceedingly greatly lavished with examples and illustrations. Maybe not a quick read, but well worth the effort. I had Dr. Kolb at the Seminary and always felt I was trying to fill a glass of water from a fire hydrant! His status has changed at the Sem which gives him more time to write, which is good!
For the lover of Luther, Dr. Kolb has given us a gem. Complete with brief bio's and connection stories, Dr. Kolb introduces us to the people local and foreign who were influetntial to the great Wittenberg Reformer. As you read Luther keep this close to you, it will come in handy as a reference to the people and events Luther frequently discusses...
