Luther wasn’t always right. This book of his is quintessentially a bad example of how Christians should feel about the Jews. A closer reading of Paul seems to be the solution to its error. That, and not reading hate literature about those who are different from you, would also help. In Luther’s Jews: A Journey into Anti-Semitism, the author, Thomas Kaufmann, conveys that most of what Luther knew, or thought he knew, about the Jews came from anti-Semitic literature. Some of the titles show more involved were probably, “The Entire Jewish Faith” (1530) by Anton Margaritha and “Against the Sabbatarians,” (1538). It is through these books that he is instructed to believe that Jews poisoned wells, kidnapped children and ritually sacrificed them, and that Jews cursed Christians every week in their synagogues on the Sabbath. There are a lot of slanderous accusations given here by Luther that are taken as fact.

But Luther takes it a step further. Not only does he believe that Jews are constantly blaspheming and slandering God, Christ, and Mary, but he believes Christians will be judged by God for not treating the Jews severely for it. That is why he proposes several actions against the Jews. He proposes burning their synagogues and schools. Also, their homes, he says, should be burned, so that like the gypsies they should live in people’s barns. All their prayer books and Talmudic writings should be taken from them, as well as the Bible! Safe-conduct on the highways should be taken from them. Usury, one of the contention points between Christians and Jews at the time, should be denied them. Instead, they should be forced to live lives of hard physical labor. In another place in On the Jews and Their Lies, Luther says the Jews should be forbidden to praise God, give thanks, pray, or to teach publicly among Christians. They should be forbidden to say the name of God in Christians’ hearing.

I’m interested in the story of the Jews in Europe. Where and when did anti-Semitism originate? With Luther as one vector of anti-Semitism I’m beginning to wonder if it began with Christianity itself. There is a lot more for me to investigate and explore, though, before I come to that conclusion.

Traveling back in time, I guess I had to go back to Scripture. One Scripture that had me worried was Matthew 27: 24-25, where the Jewish crowd at the sentencing of Jesus cried out not only, “Crucify him!” but also, “His blood be on us and on our children!” This Scripture seems to set up the Jews for perpetual punishment and also seems to encourage Christian anger and hatred for the Jews. Sometimes you have to be careful though. Is this Scripture teaching Christians to hate Jews? Most people who love the Bible I think would agree that the Bible doesn’t teach and cannot teach hate. Hate is a misreading of the Scriptures. So, how are we supposed to be reacting to this verse here?

I believe the answer comes in the writings of Paul. In Romans 9:1-5, Paul, the great evangelist, testifies to his own sense of grief that the Jews had not accepted Christ. Grief is maybe a part of the answer. Christians should be concerned about the Jews, maybe even grieved, from the point of view of their own salvation, but not hateful. In another passage in Romans, Romans 11, Paul talks about how the Gentiles have been grafted onto the tree which was once Judaism, and how the Gentiles should be humble about that and not proud. How many errors in Luther’s, On the Jews and Their Lies, could have been avoided if he had just kept an attitude of Christian humility towards the Jews? And finally, in Romans 2:4, Paul talks about how it’s the kindness of God that leads you to repentance. Not hate! It’s kindness that is the beginning of the evangelistic process, and that is given freely and generously, without any expectation of results or getting something back in return. It’s surprising to me how Luther, otherwise such an expert on Paul, could skip over these verses.

(Some Biblical commentators maintain that the primary audience for Matthew’s Gospel was probably Jewish Christians, anyway. These Christians would probably not be as tempted as Gentiles to react to Matthew 27: 24-25 with anger and hate, as they would have been hating their own people. Thus, their reactions may have been more in line with Paul’s, that of grief and concern.)

So, I think we have some options in interpreting Matthew 27:24-25. Elsewhere in the New Testament there are passages about the conflict between Judaism and Christianity in the first century. At that time the conflict was intense, as you can read for yourself. But I think Scripture still can guide Christians as to how to approach the problem now.

For everyone else, please be assured, anti-Semitism is not a Christian worldview. If Christianity has ever partaken of anti-Semitism, it has done so in error.

Admittedly, we are judging Luther now according to modern truths and values. Heiko Oberman in his, Luther: Man Between God and the Devil, points out that Luther was not basing his anti-Semitism solely on race, like the Nazis - never-the-less, the Nazis did utilize Luther’s book for their own purposes - but on a desire to see a homogenous, prosperous Christian Europe. His vision was of a wholly Christian Europe, united around the Scriptures and the gospel. To him, the Jews were just a hindrance to that. Perhaps we should be careful in this day and age, what our foundational or pre-foundational truths and assumptions are. They could be used not in the service of a better world or of God, like this book by Luther.

Food, music, beer, and good company. And also, guests who’d write down every word. Martin Luther’s Table Talk is the result of an unusual set of circumstances: Luther, after a very long day’s work, would find himself the host to a bunch of friends, visitors, and students (boarders) who’d come for dinner. That’s a pretty large crowd: Martin and Katie had six children and fostered four more, and the evenings would be filled with music, hot food, and lively conversation. Did I mention show more that Katharina ran a brewery? And in these cozy, comfortable evenings, when the conversation turned to topics of theology, people were on hand to preserve Luther’s every word. So no pressure, right? The result of these candid comments, sometimes very brief, and removed from context, is a theology book unlike any other I’ve read. Witty, biting, and quite personal, this book is at turns insightful, funny, over-the-top, and even a little troubling. A remarkable portrait of a complicated man who is nevertheless completely honest and unrestrained in these pages. A fascinating read. show less
"As unyielding as the Holy Spirit is in the matter of maintaining and defending the doctrine of faith, so mild and merciful is he toward men for their sins, as long as sinners repent." A beautiful treatise on justification—on grace, faith, and the goodness of Christ. Luther's writing is clear and powerful, and he draws many parallels between the church's struggles in the first century and the difficulties Luther faced in his own time. (He also suggests that modern Germans may be descended show more from the people of Galatia, so that's an interesting historical perspective.) He describes Paul's conversion, his interactions with the other apostles, and his disagreements with Peter. Luther explains Scripture by linking it to other Scriptures; here, he puts the epistle to the Galatians in context of Paul's other writings, of the Gospels, and of the Old Testament. An enlightening read that prompts much soul-searching and introspection, but which always brings the focus right where it belongs, on the saving work of Jesus.

A note on the edition:
I couldn't find on Goodreads the particular edition I read. I listened to a digital audiobook version, and while it listed a publisher and a narrator, there was no listing of either translator or ISBN. This version made a reference to dollar amounts and mentioned prisoners being executed via the electric chair, so I have some questions about the method of the translator. I would hate to think that the anonymous translator was telling me what he thinks I'll understand, not what Luther actually said.

My dad was a baptist preacher and I was raised very strict. I don’t remember once hearing about Martin Luther being mentioned once in the church. As I’ve gotten older, I have heard a bit about this man, but not enough to carry a conversation about. I found the book to be quite intriguing but hard to follow at times. I contribute that to my lack of knowledge of this man. I admire him for standing up for his faith and acknowledging that there was some unsavory things going on in the show more church. I wonder how many of us would be as bold as him? I have always been taught that if it can’t be backed up by the Bible, it is not true. Over the years I have been cautious as to what pastors say. I may not always agree with them, but if I can find scripture that backs up what they are saying, then I know it is from God.

Martin Luther was the type that would not stand for deceit and corruption he felt was going on in the church in the 1500s. In this book is his thoughts of where the church should be and what the Word said. I read the book and wanted to mention a few things he said that caught my attention. In “Theses “ 43 he talks about how we need to remind ourselves “ that our sins are forgiven , that we have the Spirit of Christ, that we are beloved children of God, we should be ever so happy and grateful to God.” Where we fail is when we walk in fear and doubt and forget that God loves us unconditionally. I need to remind myself of that daily.

In “Theses “53 I found it to be very powerful. As we sit in church and listen to the pastor, are we remembering that God ordained him to speak the Words that God ? “Therefore we must not separate or part God and man, according to our natural reason and understanding .” When the pastor speaks I want to soak in His Word and hear His voice. I think we get wrapped up in the man behind the pulpit and forget that he is a messenger for God. We sometimes put pastors on a pedestal and start to worship him instead of God.

I really enjoyed the book and found there to be many nuggets of truth through out the book. Readers may not agree on everything Martin Luther wrote , but I think it is worth reading with open ears and a open heart to see where his faith was. He doesn’t mince words and speaks with authority and truth. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about a man who “dared to question a practice of the Roman Catholic Church .”

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
