ARC provided by Netgalley

I was just diagnosed as being on the Asperger’s spectrum (or Autism Spectrum Disorders) last year. Since then I have been eagerly laying my hands on any book that looks like it might be useful or contain good information in it as I do a crash course in how to better understand myself and things that I can tell people. I’ve been eternally grateful to Jessica Kingsley publishing for putting out so many excellent titles and for Netgalley for allowing me to have show more access to them. Can I Tell You About Autism? is a great little book to introduce young readers (and older readers as well) to the basics of autism as described by someone on the autistic spectrum. The relatively simple text and illustrations provide readers with an excellent idea of how people on the spectrum might think and react to situations. My one complaint with the book is that the cover itself is somewhat childish looking and might deter some readers from giving it a try. However, I do recommend this book as an excellent resource for the introduction of autism for young readers, particularly those that might have a sibling or a friend on the spectrum, as this title will help them understand autism a bit better. Four out of five stars. show less
This informational book is a DK publishing book. It is colorful and has lots of factual information with its illustrations. It lays out the facts in a very clear way and is easily navigable so students can find the facts they are looking for if using it for research, or can learn lots of quick facts about impressionism if they are just interested. Younger students may be drawn to it because of its pictures and could get something out of it, but older elementary students and above could use show more it to get a lot of information. show less
A children's novel which tells the story of nine-year-old Adam who has Asperger syndrome and dreads Sports Day. He is therefore delighted when his head teacher announces an Alternative Sports Day with some very different challenges - quizzes, riddles and a treasure hunt - all the things that Adam enjoys. However, the days throws up a number of dilemmas for Adam.
Ugh. This book was printed in Comic Sans. It has useful dialog suggestions for a child with ASD on how to talk about his/her diagnosis with friends, but it was quite cheesy. It is also quite British.
