An encyclopaedic volume that recounts the history of the Romans in all of 250 pages, all of them blazing with bright and colorful photographs, reproductions of the art and architecture of the times, maps, and charts. Packed with so much information, it is a bit difficult to read through, and there is perhaps not enough analysis to help us take in and understand the phenomenon of the Roman Empire as a whole. This is particularly obvious in the last pages, when the author starts to ponder on show more the reasons for its fall. For that, one will perhaps have to start again with Gibbon and his aftermath. show less
Excellent overview of the Roman Empire, daily lives, military life, frontier life, economy, architecture, scandals, etc. The architecture parts didnt appeal to my personal tastes but the rest is well written and a very good overview. Just keep in mind its an overview, a very informative and accessible one, but just an overview.
The title is a bit misleading since Rodgers delves more deeply into art and architecture and other aspects of Greece in addition to military affairs thus it is more of a basic survey of highlighting military affairs. The text is sparse but the emphasis is really on a illustrated survey of Greece military history highlighting the leading personalities and city-states of ancient Greece. In this case, I would not state that this is an "authoritative" guide but more of a introduction.
