A mouse in a pet shop runs through the qualities of the other animals in a pet shop as he pushes his pro-mice agenda on potential pet adopters.
My daughter liked the peppy rhymes and all the puppies, cats, and other critters scattered through the pages when she was three, but I was not persuaded to like mice or this book.

Rated "Indifferent" in our old book database by Rod; rated "Good" by Adelia.

Dear Poet: Notes to a Young Writer: A Poetic Journey into the Creative Process for Readers, Writers, Artists, & Dreamers by Charles Ghigna
This simple, sweet book is a great gift for any writer and, really, any reader. Dear Poet is not a long, formal instruction manual on writing (which can be a turn-off), but is instead a glimpse into the creative life. With short, memorable pieces, Charles offers advice, defines what a poem can be, and provides thought-provoking words of wisdom based on his many years as a poet. While it's perfect for someone just beginning the creative adventure, it also serves as inspiration for those who show more need reminding as to the powerful effect artists have on the way we see the world and why it's so important that we continue to add our voices.

Ghigna's The Night the Forest Came to Town is a children's tale in verse about one magical evening when a spring wind blew seeds down into a grey town. Over the course of the night, rain showers set the plants to flourishing, and animals arrive, to build nests and dams. Come morning, the town is no longer grey, but a riot of colour and greenery.
I read this with my cubs, and they loved it. I myself enjoyed the poetry, though the whimsy of the tale was somewhat lost by my own understanding as show more an archaeologist, of how nature actually reclaims towns, in that they are usually abandoned… Otherwise, this story had a somewhat sinister note for me. A horror story akin to The Happening. Just me, I know. And I know the point of the story is we shouldn't try to eradicate nature from our cities. That life will always find a way. The children in the story seemed happier with the flourishing nature, and to notice it more. There's one adult dude always on his phone. But come morning, the adults can't help but notice.

The Alphabet Parade by Charles Ghigna
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
What a beautifully illustrated book that can engage children on many different reading levels.
The Alphabet Parade by Charles Ghigna takes you on a parade through the alphabet from A to Z. Younger kids can enjoy the pictures, older can recognize the letters, and those a little older can pick out more sight words and read along. My daughter had so much fun helping read this book aloud that we read it twice.
