This is Maitland's first work in which he writes from the perspective of a Legal historian. A significant portion is devoted to the historical understanding of 'Liberty' (146 pages). The next 27 pages are devoted to the historical concept of 'Equality.' The last 17 pages are his historical perspective of how historians view the political world. Although it is a bit rough plowing through this work, it will be worth the effort. His three flaws are his view of Tom Paine which is inadequate, his show more view of Edmund Burke is inconclusive, & his own underestimation of what defines 'socialism' in respect to the Malthusian theory. Other than these, it is well put together. show less
A worthwhile collection of essays by Maitland - still one of the great legal historians - mainly focusing on higher-level topics in English mediaeval and renaissance law. Recommended as an introduction to Maitland for anyone not willing to commit to the more extended task of reading Maitland and Pollock.
