It was a challenging read for me. I enjoyed the presidential speeches and letters. Everything else was uninteresting to me, especially the poetry.

This is a book of the writings of those who have dissented from the mainstream of politics of American life. Most of the dissention written about is now issues generally agreed with by mainstream America.

I think the writings selected reflect a certain failure of nerve on the part the editor who selected the writings. For instance nothing written by George Lincoln Rockwell was chosen. Not that I especially want to read Rockwell, but he is a dissenter. He is just one example of what one might show more call an unpopular dissenter which are not represented in the book. Also abortion is allowed opinions both for and against. show less

Very interesting. The speeches show you where the country was and what the president was worried about providing the people.
