I make it a habit to read as many of the urban sketching books as I can, as they're all unique in some way, even if just in the art examples that they show. This book is like many, in that it's an introduction to the art form, and not highly technical (I think that's a good thing). The really cool and unique thing about this book is that it doesn't just focus on pen/ink/watercolor - there are some nice tips and examples for painting in oils, especially.

Overall, perhaps the best thing to say show more is that after I read my library copy, I ordered a copy of the book for my own shelves at home. show less
My library's collection of watercolor books with tutorials is mostly geared toward intermediate skill. So finding a book like this one was a relief. It's not just for beginners but super beginners that don't feel at ease doing normal beginner coloring. Why I go wrong with these exercises it's not a big deal. They're extra simple and make me feel like a kid filling in a coloring book. In fact, initially I wasn't sure if this was for kids. There's no indication that it's for kids any more than show more any other beginner, but I think it can transform the reading artist back into a kid all the same. I think I'll have more confidence moving on to the few other less-beginner beginner watercolor books at my library now. show less
Awesome little book originally published in Spanish. Packed with details about light and shading that the bigger books only touch on. I've become a big fan of Barron's art instruction books, especially the little $10 ones, and buying or at least reading this one is a no-brainer if you're an artist.
Has "In The Style Of..." featurettes on: Alexander Cozens, Honoré Daumier, Georges Seurat, Odilon Redon
Delivers on the title: it's definitely a practical course for drawing and painting. As someone who has taken only one art class beyond elementary school, and it was a semester high school course that didn't include acrylics or oils, this book is a fortunate library find. I'll probably check it out again in the future when I'm ready to tackle the oil tutorials. The internet has great resources to read on techniques or watch tutorials, but I find nothing replaces the depth of a good book.
