The peoples of Scandinavia first appear in history as farmers tilling the thin soils of Denmark, then crossing the seas to Sweden and Denmark, becoming adept at trade. Suddenly about AD 800, with the perfection of their amphibious double-ended square-rigged assault ship, they shifted to raiding and looting their neighborhoods - "a-Viking". The Viking era stretches from AD 800 to 1100.
