A workmanlike accounting of a "famous victory," save that our knowledge of what the participants were thinking seems to be really limited; this is particularly the case from the perspective of the Royalist camp. Still, this seems to be about the most recent substantive account of the battle available.
One of the best books I've read on the subject , the only problem is the maps which are not as clear as they should be .
The progression of the war towards Pascendachele and the work of different forces is clearly written along with all the commanders that took part .
It's also a commentary on the conditions of warfare in WW1 , it's written mainly from the command perspective it helps in understanding the nature of the decision making they did as well

a clear and concise analysis of the 1918 German offensive. It only lacked a few more maps of the allied counter offensive, and prehapes some more concluding notes. very informative.
This interesting little book contrasts the successes of the German and Allied offensives of 1918. Evans give some attention to the evolving thinking in offensive doctrine that developed in the German army, dependent largely on more complex and specialized artillery and infantry tactics. He shows that the Allied innovations were similar, with addition of the adoption of greater reliance on air power and the development of an armored arm as well-a combined arms approach.
Evans does a good job show more of providing a simple overview of the German Kaiserschlact in the spring of 1918, and Allied summer offensives. The narrative is often broken with maddeningly long block quotations, when what is probably needed is a little more narrative guidance. Even so, this is a worthwhile addition to my WWI library. show less
