Disney Peter Pan Cinestory Comic by Disney

Can we resist another Peter Pan book, even if it’s a (kind of crappy) film stills-filled “graphic novel”? The answer is the same as to whether we plan on ever growing up: NEVER! Peter Pan will always have a special place in my heart, even if it has its problematic moments, and the Disney version specifically is particularly nostalgic. As soon as I turned the first page and spotted that aerial swoop into London over Big Ben we were right back flying alongside Peter and ready to play the show more adventure to Neverland again. The story is so familiar and I’ve seen the film so many times that my mind fills in the timing gaps between frames and the largely removed musical numbers, so even without these crucial story aspects the occasionally awkward moments in the book were quickly glossed over. Too caught up were we with pirates ships, Skull Rock, and mermaid-filled lagoons to care much that the paper quality of the book was a touch subpar, the film stills chosen occasionally caught the most awkward of moments, and that the silence without Pan’s laughter was palpable. As the journey inevitably came to an end with our safe return to the Darling nursery we are once again reminded that while all children grow up, the quiet magic of Peter Pan lives on in our memories, and it never fails to bring a tear to our eye as even the most hard hearted curmudgeons (we’re looking at you, Mr. Darling) is reminded that yes, maybe we have seen that ship before… a long time ago, when we were very young. show less

Real Life, Vol. 1 by Disney

Lifeless. A committee of people in an Italian Disney subsidiary or licensee sat down and created a teen property. It has social media, emojis, chibis, hashtags, and diversity. They only forgot soul.

Three girls who barely know each other get detention together. They create a social profile for their amalgamation of a dream boy. A day later said boy shows up at school. Instead of being freaked out or putting in much beyond a token effort to find out where he came from, the girls start show more competing to see who gets to kiss him first. And this goes on for over 300 pages. As can be expected by the #1 on the cover, the final chapter is more the barest hint at the mysteries behind the enigmatic boy than a conclusion.

The art isn't bad, but I never got used to reading the blue lettering in all the word balloons.

And I certainly never got used to reading those words in blue. Maybe it makes more sense in Italian or if I were Italian? Honestly, when I was reading Disney Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge and Mickey Mouse comics regularly (which was well into my 30s), I always dreaded the Italian stories they crammed in between the magnificent Carl Barks and Don Rosa reprints. These don't seem to be the same creators, but I think there is some disconnect between what Italian comic book writers think is funny and what I find funny. I rarely laughed then, and I didn't laugh now.

My Friends Tigger and Pooh: Big Fun Book to Color by Disney

This is a perfectly fine coloring and activity books.

And no, "books" was not a typo, because this ISBN 1403781095 / 9781403781093 represents five coloring books with different titles and covers I'm currently holding in one hand and maybe two or three times more that I was not fooled into purchasing.

The books I have are all series branded as Disney My Friends Tigger & Pooh: Big Fun Book to Color from publisher Creative Edge with back cover copyrights ranging from 2009-2010 and a 2007 show more copyright notice on each interior page. When you first pick them up and start flipping through them all you see different starting pages under most of those different covers, but as you flip through all 96 pages you start to notice the same images coming up at different times in each book. So it seems the publisher took the same maybe 100 images, shuffled them, excluded a handful from each book, then printed them and slapped on variant covers.

The titles I have (with copyright and publisher code from back cover):

* Calling All Sleuthers! (2009 - CE 11983/0609 CLI)
* Look What I Found! (2010 - CE 12239/1209 CLI)
* So Much to Discover! (2009 - CE 11985/0609 CLI)
* Super Duper Bounce Tigger (2010 - CE 12240/1209 CLI)

Some internet searches turned up some other titles that may also share the same ISBN:

I'm familiar with variant covers from my many years of collecting comic books, but I don't recall any examples offhand where the title of the comic was changed along with the cover image. I have the feeling though that this may not be an uncommon practice among coloring book publishers. It's a caveat emptor situation and a book cataloging headache.

(My Pooh Project: I love Winnie the Pooh, and so does my wife. Having a daughter gave us a chance to indoctrinate her into the cult by buying and reading her every Pooh book we came across. How many is that? I’m going to count them this year by reading and reviewing one every day and seeing which month I finally run out. Track my progress here:

Winnie the Pooh Look and Find by Colette Moran

Oops, my last Look and Find book on hand. It's the least entertaining of the three I read this week, but still fun. The April Fool's Day spread is the best one here.

I do believe there is at least one more Look and Find with Eeyore that I'll have to keep an eye out for.
