A delightful collection of various Normal Rockwell artworks. This man is well-regarded in the art world for a reason, his technical skill is excellent but he could also make powerful commentaries in his pictures. Truly an American treasure.
Although somewhat of a "how to" book for painters and artists, this book is a LOT more. I highly encourage anyone interested in appreciating, viewing and creating art to give this book a read and enjoy soaking up the wisdom and imagery. Buechner brings years of experience to his simple but very useful and thought-provoking writings. As a painter/artist, I got a lot out of this book, and it was a beautiful reminder to keep it simple, treat it like a job and just get out there and create show more (especially live or plein air). But there were some incredibly useful tools on dimensionality, contrast and composition. Also, it was the first time I had heard of the fast-drying alkyd oil paint and Multimedia Art Board and wow, I love both. If mobility and/or space is an issue, these "tools" will be of great use. The paintings in this book are breathtaking as well and this book is just a wonderful exploration into portraiture, landscape and still life, in a way I did not get in art school (i.e., Buechner is infinitely more practical!). Highly recommended for any art lover. show less
The definitive biography and collection of the best of Norman Rockwell's art and illustrations. Rockwell was one of my favorite artists and illustrators; he was unmatched in his craftsmanship and ability to tell a complete story with his art. This book contains 614 illustrations, including 111 in color. Most of Rockwell's illustrations depicted ordinary people in everyday situations, but he was always able to mine fresh gold from these old themes, and he was not afraid to dip into the realm show more of political comment. show less
