Using the well-tried and always tiresome beginning of a drunken former cop who has powers of deduction outside the normal police approach has developed a mediocre mystery. The one unique element is the very continuing process of "protecting Holy Mother Church." In this case, the mere mortal is an ambitious bishop who supposedly exhibits skills in high finance and he has to be stopped, as stopped he is. The conclusion of the story is, at best, ambiguous. I read this to participate in a book show more club discussion. That ought to be interesting. Protecting "Holy Mother Church" is not something new. People have been doing it for ages, usually as justification for shady dealings of their own. God established the Church and He promised to be with all days. I don't think ordinary folks can improve on that very much. show less
