Levering urges us to consider anew and reclaim the historic testimony of abstention from alcoholic beverages, as both a witness to the world against intoxicating drink and a commitment to a spirit-led life. The problems of alcohol use in society may be greater than they ever were, and Quaker gatherings need to be safe havens. As William Penn said, principles are not half as forceful as examples. What are Friends willing to do for their faith? A clearly written challenge.
After examining the history of Friends’ corporate witness on use of alcoholic beverages, which for the most part produced a call for total abstinence, the author argues that Friends should reexamine and reclaim this testimony.
This essay presents research to conclude that Friends should renew their old testimony against the use of alcohol.
Roughly 2/3 of book is dedicated to the chronology of Pan Am from its roots in Key West to Central America to expansion, the Clippers, War, Chosen Instrument, Jet Clippers, employee revolt, National merger, Maytag years. Exhaustively illustrated with hard to find photography through out.

Beginning on show more page 234, the book has photos of all of the active Pan Am pilots in 1984. In addition, all the active pilots are listed alphabetically in a separate section. Also, there is a listing of "Pan American's Retired Pilots." Photos of representative pages are shown below. This appealing airline history book was published before this prestigious and flag carrying national airline fell victim to the changing times of the airline industry and the damaging effect of airline regulations that didn't allow Pan Am to fly domestic routes. show less
