This diverse collection of poems by women introduced me to writers I hadn't read before as well as reminded me of past moments of reading poetry. The words were familiar or startling--sometimes both at the same time. I felt a strong kinship with the editor, Marilyn Sewell, because I too have collected spiritual verses. And her love for the work and the poets in this book mirrored my love for the work and poets in my book. The poetry inspired me to think about, and feel, the role of women in show more divinity, love, universality, worship, and change. I didn't connect with all the poems, but I found a good number of profound connections. Finishing this book was a great way to begin my summer solstice. show less
A series of vignettes that touch on various aspects of life, death, the unknown. Some are witty, some more sobering. It is a quick read and I suspect will be a good resource for use in services and perhaps writing. Sewell is a retired UU minister.
This is an OUTSTANDING resource. It is an invaluable addition to my poetry library, a beautiful selection from many different women poets. Highly recommended for its diversity and resonance of voice.
An extensive anthology of poetry by women, including most of the masters of the last half of the 20th century--Atwood, Levertov, Dove, Kumin, Swenson, Sexton, Forche, Grahn, Kenyon. The book is divided into themes, into which perhaps, another reader would place the poems differently. Some of the themes: Generations, identity, birth, defiance, the body, simple blessings, mothering, work, and--you knew it was coming--illness and death. Nonetheless, there is a wide variety of poems by a wide show more variety of women with craft. What's not to like? show less
