Moral - Do not be too hard to suit or you may have to be content with the worst or with nothing at all.

The heron comes to a river in the morning and sees various small fish swim by that he could have for breakfast but he turns up his nose... er, beak at them, even at a decent middle-sized fish. As the day gets warmer the fish move from the shore to the cooler depths of the lake and the heron has to content himself with a little snail.

IDK about this moral. Having some standards/discernment show more isn't always a bad thing, but of course, you have to decide when to apply them or not. But then, this was from a time when we had a lot less choices when it came to food or other things compared to an average person in the 21st century who lives in a relatively decent area/lifestyle. show less
I thought I'd really like this, but nope. The writing was incredibly informal and inconsistent (style-wise). The stories had no moral, that I could figure out anyway. I don't know, just really was expecting something else. I told my kid I didn't really like it and she goes, "I know!, I told you!"... should've trusted her 8-year old opinion on it.
I had mixed feelings about this book after reading it. I liked the book because the moral of the story is clearly visible in the authors writing. The book also states the moral at the being of the book to make it clear to readers. "Treat other as you would want to be treated." But I didn't like this book because the characters weren't well developed. I feel like information was missing about the Fox and the Stork's relationship. The illustrations made it seem like the dinners were dates by show more the Fox and Stork dressing really fancy. It would have been nice for the author to elaborate a little more on their relationship.
Overall, this fable is for readers to understand the importance of treating others the way that they'd like to be treated.

Each "room" in this house is drawn in the style of a famous artist, from Giuseppe Arcimboldo to Grant Wood. For instance, a delicate pen and ink staircase is a tribute to Albrecht Dürer, while the mailbox is wrapped, à la Christo. Probably more fun if you're already familiar with many of these 22 artists, but also useful as a learning resource.
