Best line:

"Hey, twenty years from now those Huey Lewis tapes will still be classics."

Actually, this book is classic. It's not that it's so original--it reminded me of many other books of that era (particularly He Noticed I'm Alive and Other Hopeful Signs for the mom who abandoned her family to find herself. This was such a big trend of the '80s I feel lucky my mom did not abandon me!) However this novel displayed all the very best characteristics of an '80s kids book, like humor and complex show more characters. I did not know this was the second in a series; all the backstory was explained very simply. Brought me back to a time when Bruce Springsteen, Annie Lennox, and yes weirdly Huey Lewis were our idols. show less
*spoiler alert!*

I *loooooooved* this book!! I admit I thought it was pretty stupid at first.... Phoebe is, let's face it, pretty stupid. I know she's young (second great, I think it was?), but pool sharks? Really? And the way she acts about the horses, and the poison oak... Wow.

But I loooooved the end, with her leading that camper revolt, and all the kids standing up with her in the pond and yelling... That was just *awesome*
A nice early chapter book. Fiona is lonely and saves a bee, while taking the bee to the park she finds friends.
½
Older book, but cute story about a boy who is only talent is trowing tantrums. When he goes to stay with his grandmother, he's met his match.
