Do you ever read a book and only know that you didn't write it because the arguments are put so much more eruditely than you would have been able so to do? I am sure not, as you are probably infinitely erudite; I, on the other hand, have on rare occasions experienced this phenomena - although, not often, as I am a contrary so-and-so! This book is one of those rare events.
Eric Heffer, an ex-Labour politician writes an eminently readable book which, whilst he openly admits to being his show more personal view, he amply backs up with quotations and historical background. Eric was, or at least, his party image was, a big bluff no-nonsense man on the left of the Labour movement and this book is a pleasant surprise, to me; he argues his point well, but is modest enough to accept Nye Bevan's old adage, "That's my truth: now, what about yours?"
I am not sure that this book would cause an unbeliever to experience a Road to Damascus moment, but it certainly challenges a believer. I have said that his views dove tail with my own but, inevitably, there are sections where doubt arises. Even here, it is hard to take offence or stray too far from Eric's views.
