I had to read this for a masters class so take that into consideration.
I liked only a few of these essays with some bringing me to tears because I could relate to the struggles. Otherwise, I don’t think I would have finished this book if it hadn’t been required reading. I felt so e of the essays were almost preachy in the way of “I’ve done this, what have you done” and I didn’t care for that tone. I feel this book is only good as a text for classes and not a book to pick up off show more the shelf. I’m not saying it has to be a leisure read because it does have some inspirational stories, but it’s not one I would have chosen for myself. show less

Sonia Nieto and Patty Bode look at how personal, social, political, cultural, and educational factors affect the cuccess or failure of students in today's classroom. Expanding upon the popular case-study approach, Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education examines the lives of real students who are affected by multicultural education, or the lack of it. This social justice view of multicultural education encourages teachers to work for social change in their show more classrooms, schools, and communities."-- from publisher's web site show less
