Antony Penrose

Anthony "Tony" Penrose's parents were friends with one of the premier Spanish Surrealist artists, Joan Miró. In this book, Penrose writes about his childhood impressions of Miró and about the artist's life and art. The book contains illustrations of Miró's work, as well as art by children who were inspired by Miró. The personal connection, including family photos, is a nice entrée for children, and the artwork is very accessible. My only quibble is that it was sometimes difficult to show more tell which artworks were by Miró and which by children. I feel they could have been better labelled and distinguished. My six- and three- year-olds both enjoyed this story then trying their hand at their own Miró-inspired art. show less

Book club read. Rare read on Kindle, as could not get from library. Written by her son, but you would think so until the end. He writes about himself as child in third person and presents a very poor mother son relationship. Lee was an interesting person, but would have been difficult to live with as son or husband. She could immerse herself in a passion (she called them “jags”), whether photography, cooking, music to the exclusion of all else and be fearless in her pursuit.
