Notable for having been published before most Canadian literary scholars acknowledged there *was* any significant 'urban' Canadian literature, this anthology collects a wide variety of urban themes and writers together. A quaint anachronism, now, but many of the stories and poems are very good ones, and the writers are all top notch.
An anthology of 26 Canadian short stories, from the 1850s to the 1980s, edited and with an introduction by John Stevens. A fine selection, representing a great many of Canada's leading authors. Suitable for a Canlit textbook, but an enjoyable and stimulating read for pleasure.
Authors include Susanna Moodie, Charles G.D. Roberts, Duncan Campbell Scott, Stephen Leacock, Mazo de la Roche, Morley Callaghan, Sinclair Ross, Ernest Buckler, Mavis Gallant, Alice Munro, W.D.
