John Waters (1) (1946–)

Only Waters could have written something so filthy yet funny and life-affirming at the same time. And luckily, he's on hand to read it as well. Since he is at least tied with someone as the best audiobook reader of all time, in this case, skip the book and listen to the audiobook. This is a story of three generations of women, the grandmother an illegal pet plastic surgeon, the daughter a professional luggage thief, and the granddaughter the operator of an illegal trampoline parlor. And show more after that, it gets strange. But I'll let you enjoy it for yourselves. Any attempt to describe the plot would fall short of the grandeur of the thing itself. John Waters, film director (of trash and pure camp!), writer, artist has decided to hitchhike across America, from his home in Baltimore to his apartment in San Francisco. He has his wit, his iconic pencil-thin mustache, and a cardboard sign that reads “I’m Not Psycho” (and contact with his wonderful assistants in Baltimore). The book is actually three books in one—Waters presents stories of the best that could happen to him; the worst that could happen and what really happened. Some show more of my favorite stories involved a student driver, a store that sells used items (in every form) and of course a carnival (this is John Waters). The real trip was actually quite touching and sweet—I really felt the Waters truly appreciated and liked the people he met in the middle of the country. Hilarious, touching, campy, filthy and quite trashy (again this is John Waters). I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book. Not for everyone—4 ½ out of 5 stars. show less

Waters is perhaps the funniest person in the world, in a rather deep way, even if he is talking about the most disgusting or outrageous subjects. By all means, listen to the audiobook read by Waters himself. He is also perhaps the best audiobook reader I have ever heard, and the competition is fierce. This book is worth the price (or borrow) just for his chapter on music, which ranges from hilarious car-crash pop songs to his appreciation of country music to his recommendation of Glenn Gould show more and Maria Callas. Other chapters talk about many of his films at length, monkey art, and a few things I enjoyed listening to but don't want to mention in the review! Throughout, Waters comes across as the wittiest, most intelligent, most endearing character you could ever want to spend time with. Don't miss this one. show less

WOW, I mean WOW. This contemporary well written and very real dialogue story was a breath of fresh air. I grabbed this from Audible as a free original and Damn It, and so freakin' glad I did. It begins with this huge action scene and from there I could never catch my breath.
There were a 1,000 characters and damn it if they didn't all play poignant parts that are crucial to the plot, though it seems insignificant at the time, shit man,it all comes together. Not to mention it is narrated by show more the one and only JOHN WATERS. Who has a knack to making every line either critically important or is dripping with sarcasm. His voice was the nail in the coffin that makes this one of the best books of 2019!!!!! show less
