This book is such Mr. Robinson's style...greatness! Reading this book was not just a story but a weird (in a good way) journey into another reality that will blow your mind. It just might have you thinking you are crazy with a capital "C".

You would not be able to tell from my comments above that I had reservations about reading this book. This is because when I first picked up this book to start I was not sure about the concept. I am a big fan of Mr. Robinson so I know that he can write but show more still I thought the concept was too out there for me. Yet as I mentioned above this was more than just a story but one that will blow your mind. It sure had me hooked. show less
It starts out well enough. Sets a scenario that takes a bit from Heinlein’s starship troopers mixed with Frank Herbert’s Hellstrom’s Hive and introduces a shadow world that is populated with a menagerie of Doom (video game) like creatures. So far so good, but then there is the protagonist, a superhero goes it alone and killing ‘em all kind of character whose powers are not only unbelievable but in his creation was riddled with inconsistencies.
The idea, or rather the combination of show more ideas makes for an intriguing package and deserves 3-4 stars, sadly the main character begets a lone star- and I’m not talking about Texas. show less
This book was hilarious. AND the weak helpless female troupe was thrown out the window, which I loved. There were scenes where men saved women and far not where women did the saving. There was a romance but a not a hot and heavy one. More of a realistic coupling.

The tone is pretty light especially for a book full of battles.

And the aliens...... I have zero words. .... they should not be as hilarious as they are.
This starts with an assassin meet-cute. I mean...

Amusing, terrifyingly competent AI. Snarky mystery assassin MC. Terrible thief love-interest--target? At 16% in, a very clever and interesting backstory delivery.

At 59%, I can't guess what's next. Do you know how unusual that is after decades of reading?

Now I'm done, and I've read the author's note about how his books are all linked. Potential other books, that's always cool. The sequel to this one will be called Khaos, and yep. I'll be show more reading it.

If you are in the mood for humor, weird powers and a mysterious past, killing to survive, and never knowing what's coming next, this is your novel. It's funny and intense and satisfying--an unusual combination.
