John Doyle has been artistic director of four prestigious UK regional theatres, where some 200 productions include musicals, new plays and the classics. His extensive work with actor-musicians includes productions of Candide on a UK tour, Carmen at the Royal Opera House, Into the Woods at the York Theatre Royal and Fiddler on the Roof at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury. He has numerous West End credits, including his own version of The Gondoliers and a critically acclaimed Mack and Mabel. Future productions include The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny for Los Angeles Opera, Barnum for the Old Globe Theatre and Lucia di Lammermoor for Scottish Opera, both in 2007. - Nationality

Very good teaser and introduction for the bard`s tales.
I own a few Dummies' books - and most of them I liked.
This one is very well done, as well. I would have liked a little bit more biographical data - though knowing that what we know about Shakespeare is little after all. To get started on Shakespeare with all there is to know (biography, plays, his time, literature, films, reception and such) this is a buy you will not regret. I, at least, did not.

We liked this drama very much. It's quite slow-moving at first, establishing the characters of several interesting and mostly likeable people in a small town in the United States. Then a businessman from Texas (Colin Firth, with a surprisingly authentic accent) is the catalyst for a lot of changes.
We thought the pace was good, the story very thought-provoking, and the acting excellent. Rated PG but unlikely to be of any interest to children or teens.

A great reference work -- good background plus synopses that help the casual reader and/or viewer keep things straight so they can get the most out of a play.
I cringed when told a university where I was teaching was requiring this as a textbook, but actually it is not bad for a friendly basic introduction
