This is an essential book for anyone interested in China. The author provides not a history of China itself, but a history of how Westerners have portrayed China. In reading this, the reader should also consider how this misperception of China continues to the present day.
The Uighur Empire according to the Tang dynastic histories: A study in Sino-Uighur relations, 744-840 (Asian publications series) by Colin Mackerras
Very good introduction to the Uighurs of the Tang Dynasty period followed by extracts from the Chinese texts (unfortunately, there are few if any extant Uighur texts from this period with which to balance the Chinese). A bit slow reading at times due to the lack of familiarity most readers will have with Uighur historical names, and since the Chinese names also are transcribed in Wade-Giles, at times frustrating for those who even know their Tang history.
A good introduction to the history of the various countries of Asia especially focused on the last century or two.
Read for "Marxism in Japan : Theory versus tradition / Alan Rix" - an intro to post-Meiji/pre-war Marxism.
