Samuel Beckett (1906–1989)
Author of Waiting for Godot: A Tragicomedy in Two Acts
About the Author
Nobel Prize winner (1969) Samuel Beckett was born on April 13, 1906 near Dublin, Ireland into a middle-class Protestant family. As a boy, he studied French and enjoyed cricket, tennis, and boxing. At Trinity College he continued his studies in French and Italian and became interested in theater and show more film, including American film. After graduation, Beckett taught English in Paris and traveled through France and Germany. While in Paris Beckett met Suzanne Deschevaus-Dusmesnil. During World War II when Paris was invaded, they joined the Resistance. They were later forced to flee Paris after being betrayed to the Gestapo, but returned in 1945. Beckett and Deschevaus-Dusmesnil married in 1961. Samuel Beckett's first novel was Dream of Fair to Middling Women. Among his many works are Murphy; Malone Dies; and The Unnameable. His plays include Endgame, Happy Days, Not I, That Time, and Krapp's Last Tape. In 1953, the production of Waiting For Godot in Paris by director and actor Roger Blin earned Beckett international fame. Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969. His style was postmodern minimalist and some of his major themes were imprisonment in one's self, the failure of language, and moral conduct in a godless world. Despite his fame, Samuel Beckett led a secluded life. In his later years he suffered from cataracts and emphysema. His wife Suzanne died on July 17, 1989 and Beckett died on December 22nd of the same year. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

- Samuel Barclay Beckett (13 April 1906 – 22 December 1989) was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theatre director, poet, and literary translator. A resident of Paris for most of his adult life, he wrote in both English and French.
Beckett's work offers a bleak, tragicomic outlook on human existence, often coupled with black comedy and gallows humor, and became increasingly minimalist in his later career. He is considered one of the last modernist writers, and one of the key figures in what Martin Esslin called the "Theatre of the Absurd."
Beckett was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his writing, which—in new forms for the novel and drama—in the destitution of modern man acquires its elevation." He was elected the Saoi of Aosdána ( a literary association of Irish writers) in 1984. - Nationality

A very clever and enjoyable meditation on the dullness and lack of affect in modern experience.
The characters exist, and that's about it, struggling at all turns to
Philosophically, the novel seems to play on Shakespeare's notion that 'all of life if a stage,' while reversing that axiom, essentially tackling The Meaning of Life (yes, in capital letters, damn you) thru the guise of 'This Stage is All of Life.'
They wait, they kid, they wait. Inaction, ineffectual and too defeated and confused show more to even hang themselves.
I read this directly after Bernhard's The Loser (a writer often compared to Beckett) and found that WAITING FOR GODOT deals with some of the same topics of disappointment, longing and anxiety in a much more clever and enjoyable way.
With some of Beckett's perplexing and hilarious lines, and by referencing the play's famous reliance on inaction, you can almost picture the playwright hiding behind the curtains with his middle finger raised to the audience.

It's difficult for me to write about this one. When I was a young undergraduate, Beckett's work hit me like a sandbag between the eyes, and this trilogy was the ultimate blow. It was like suddenly understanding the *how* of how awful everything was, in my viscera. I never quite recovered from it: I'm not sure whether to thank Samuel Beckett, or curse his memory.
Of course you must also understand that, as he's showing you the architecture of wrong-ness, Beckett is also excruciatingly show more funny.

If there is one question I dread, to which I have never been able to invent a satisfactory reply, it is the question what am I doing.
Molloy is not part of a trilogy (according to Beckett), but if it was, the trilogy—Great Absurdist Fiction with Bicycles—would also include Le Surmâle by Alfred Jarry and The Third Policeman by Brian O'Nolan (aka Flann O’Brien).
Beckett’s prose is hypnotically spare, his humor blacker than black. In their parallel stories, Molloy and Moran face similar show more situations and experiences even as purpose and meaning elude them—but notice how they convince themselves to persevere. Beckett even has Moran end up where Molloy began, bum leg and all. show less

Watt is my favourite Beckett work. An obsessional, regressional grotesque, savage and hilarious, like Murphy gone over with a lint remover. You can see Beckett taking a cleaver to the extraneous humanity of his earlier works, and the boiled bones which remain in the pot of Watt inform everything that comes after.
