A very useful introduction to data visualization as part of information graphics, crisp and concise yet quite comprehensive within its topic. The book covers principles and guidelines with a very distinct information design orientation (ie., focused on intelligibility and clarity of communication, for instance defining information graphics as the design of visual explanation). Then, it provides a broad palette of elementary data graphics in three different categories: quantities, locations show more and connections. All examples are thoughtfully annotated and related to the initial principles, and often re-presented as schematic drawings to highlight the key points. Even though the book technically belongs in the subject area of information design, I would consider it a very good introduction for interaction designers and students facing the challenges of information and data visualization. show less
Summarizes recent research and authors experience. Copious examples, hint of self-serving. Mostly useful because of dearth of information in this field
