I always loved this book and all the author's other stories. I wish she had written more books. Her characters are approachable and yet also wonderfully foreign. The land is just obscure enough to not be ours but also familiar enough to make it believable. I love her humor and her characterization.

I found the sequel an improvement on the first book - there's a bit more plot, a bit more worldbuilding, but it's still pretty isolated for long stretches. The main character (daughter) matures even more than the previous main character (mother), and the ending turned out to be fairly satisfying.
½
Fantasy novel, sequel to Shadow, and featuring the same characters. This one is also short, not even 200 pages. A jewel is stolen from a powerful but currently struggling priesthood, and Shadow the elvan thief is the prime suspect- and the only one who knows the whereabouts of the wizard who created the gem is Blade the assassin. To complicate things further, Shadow's friend Donya, daughter of the High Lord of the city, has already set off after the wizard with a squadron of guards. This show more book is short and fast-moving, and I'll keep an eye out for the third one, Shadow Dance. show less
