Short biography
Louis de Rouvroy was educated in part by the Jesuits, then joined the Musketeers in 1692. He inherited the title of duc de Saint-Simon on the death of his elderly father in 1693. Saint-Simon was obsessed with small details of etiquette and ceremonial precedence and it's said that for his lawsuits over these issues, as well as for opposition to royal policy, that King Louis XIV took a dislike to him. Saint-Simon also hated the illegitimate children of the king, who were legitimated and ennobled, on the grounds that they were given precedence over peers such as himself. After Louis XIV's death, the duke came back into favor with the Regent, Philippe II, Duc d’Orléans, who appointed Saint-Simon to his council and sent him on a diplomatic mission to Spain in 1721. A couple of years later, however, the Regent died, and Saint-Simon retired from court. Saint-Simon was intensely interested in all the activities at the French court, and he paid informers ranging from dukes to servants to give him the extraordinary private information that he recorded and handed down in his memoirs. These documents are invaluable to historians of the period.

Wit, humor, vitriol and pageantry -- the necessary hallmarks for a peer at the French court also deliver a great reading experience. Saint-Simon regales us with an irreverent insider's view of his more than 30 years at court, from the later days of Louis XIV to the ascension of Louis XV. All the plays for power, sex, position and money by friends, enemies, nobles and others are here, with Saint-Simon's fascinating, and brutally honest, assessment of any situation.
Plodding a bit. I am enjoying this simply because I have read so much in the era and about this King and his court that I am familiar with the names, places, events so that the behind the scenes look is interesting. I am not sure than anyone coming to it cold would find it riveting. The historical is fascinating in its own right.
Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon, GE (16 January 1675 – 2 March 1755), was a French soldier, diplomat and memoirist.[1] He was born in Paris at the Hôtel Selvois, 6 rue Taranne (demolished in 1876 to make way for the Blvd Saint-Germain). The family's ducal peerage (duché-pairie), granted in 1635 to his father Claude de Rouvroy (1608–1693), served as both perspective and theme in Saint-Simon's life and writings. He was the second and last Duke of Saint-Simon. His enormous memoirs show more are a classic of French literature, giving the fullest and most lively account of the court at Versailles of Louis XIV and the Régence at the start of Louis XV's reign. show less
