Bleh. The art is wonderful... for different subjects, not fitting for these at all. The stories are flat and dull; I don't think fans of Greek myth would like these tellings and I certainly didn't at all. One of the stories I do kinda like is Prometheus, but this truncates off the gory ending.

Worst of all is a terribly unfortunate reference to "Pygmies."

December 2021.
This collection of mythology for children is a reprint from the early 1920s. In keeping with the era, the mythology presented is strictly classical Greek and Roman with no room for other more varied myths. The myths themselves have been abridged and changed in several ways to make them more pallatable to squeamish adults. For example, when Hades (Pluto) abducts Persephone (Proserpina), there is no mention made that he is taking her to Hades, the Land of The Dead. Similar sanitizations exist show more thoughout the book.

However, for a very basic introduction to the classic Greco-Roman myths, this book will work just fine for young children and the illustrations are truly beautiful.

Thank goodness for modern adaptations. Wonder tales have their place, but these versions are just too out-of-date, relying on cultural traditions we're better shet of.

I like Price's art, but mostly for animals and young children, not for princes etc.

Skimmed carefully December 2021.
charming art deco illustrations; slightly bowlderized, rhymed version, but with some merit
