Book 257 - Edited by Gaby Morgan - Christmas Poems
A wonderful selection of old poems, new poems, Christmas carols and Christmas songs are beautifully presented in a book of all your festive favourites.
Eleanor Farjeon (1881 - 1965) was an English author of children’s poems…stories…plays and satires. Perhaps best known as the author of the timeless and forever wonderful ‘Morning had broken’…a long time favourite of post primary assemblies in the 1980s as the music teacher could show more play it and the students knew the words.
Stephen Fry put her writings up there with AA Milne and Lewis Caroll…but I confess…I hadn’t heard of her…her work yes…but not her.
Worth reading about her life…her faith…and her love for all things literary.
I bring her up simply to put the poem I have reproduced below from this lovely book into context…
‘Mary’s Burden’ is one of those poems that has layer upon layer for the Christian and I won’t insult your intelligence here by explaining it to you…instead…I ask to to mull over…contemplate…meditate…pray even on the last lines of verses 2, 3 and the whole of verse 4.
Never a burden to His mother…carried a burden for the whole world.
Mary’s Burden
My Baby, my Burden,
Tomorrow the morn
I shall go lighter
And you will be born.
I shall go lighter,
But heavier too
For seeing the burden
That falls upon you.
The burden of love,
The burden of pain,
I'll see you bear both
Among men once again.
Tomorrow you'll bear it
Your burden alone,
Tonight you've no burden
That is not my own
My Baby, my Burden,
Tomorrow the morn
I shall go lighter
And you will be born. show less
