A more in-depth introduction to the history and teachings of Islam and is especially helpful enumerating the different sects within it. What I found very helpful was the author's discussion on the "Islam in America" (p.310f), "Misuse of Fundamentalism" (p.404f), and the many other short but enlightening reflections on Islam influence in various countries in chapters 14 ("Islam in Transition") and 15 ("Current Trends). Although this is the 2000 edition of the book, which leaves a lot of holes show more in what has occurred since then, I still find it to be a valuable read to help understand the its history, culture, political, and religious ideas. show less
A very good account of the main themes in Islam. Definitely on the conservative side though
