If you want to read the Bible, which I'm not necessarily recommending, you could do a lot worse than this translation. Designed to be fairly readable by modern English speakers and yet do justice to the poetry, I found this the first Bible that I was able to understand what it was saying without notes.
My favorite English translation. Editors at least once footnote a verse, and admit the translation could mean exactly the opposite! Verse is distinguished from prose, which is helpful. The Apocryphal books deleted from Protestant bibles in the nineteenth century are here. They're important, as is the process by which the Bible has been collected.
