This book showed some promise in the introduction, and seemed like it might actually address the question, "whither theory?" in an interesting way. Ultimately, it wound up being little more than a history of the progress of theory through the ages, but without really questioning the very idea of "history" or "progress" or for that matter, "theory." The book promised to apply the tools of theory to theory itself, but then amounted to little more than a chronological list of names and ideas, show more most of which should be pretty familiar to anyone who has actually studied theory. show less
