Chronicle and Romance Froissart, Malory, Holinshed (The Harvard Classics Series) by Charles William Eliot
I only read the selection of Froissart's Chronicle, after reading the exquisite historical fiction book [b:The Ill-Made Knight|13550502|The Ill-Made Knight|Christian Cameron|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1377004653s/13550502.jpg|19117307] I was very curious to approach the work of Froissart about medieval warfare. Very interesting and highly educative, the language of this edition is a bit archaic and remembering all the names of the characters a nightmarish task, but it is, in my opinion, a show more must-read to better understand the workings, the culture and the men behind the events of the earlier stages of the Hundred Years War. show less
The description of England : the classic contemporary account of Tudor social life by William Harrison
In this book, we hear the voice of the sixteenth century describing in great detail the state of England in that time. William Harrison, chaplain to Lord Cobham, wrote copiously on every aspect of English life: from clothing to coinage, rivers and cities, precedence and peasantry, food and houses, law, the navy, animals both wild and domestic, fairs and markets, precious stones and salt, and many other toopics, giving us an unparalleled insider's view of the period. He does fall victim to show more the rampant sixteenth century epidemic of tracing everything to the Romans, but you can skip those bits. An invaluable reference work. show less
Used by Shakespeare for his historical plays. I need to buy "Shakespeare's Holinshed" which shows where Shakespeare took his information (I believe it was the Second Edition of Holinshed). Volumes had 'Red Rust' affecting the leather but this has been fixed by numerous applications of my leather treatment conditioner.
