Sivananda Ashram - Short biography
- Swami Sivananda Saraswati (September 8, 1887—July 14, 1963) was a Hindu spiritual teacher and a well known proponent of Sivananda Yoga and Vedanta. Sivananda was born Kuppuswami in Pattamadai, in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. He studied medicine and served in Malaya as a physician for several years before taking up sannyasa (loosely translated into English as 'monasticism'). He lived most of the later part of his life near Muni Ki Reti, Rishikesh. He is the founder of The Divine Life Society (1936), Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy (1948) and author of over 200 books on Yoga, Vedanta and a variety of other spiritual subjects. He established Sivananda Ashram, the location of the headquarters of The Divine Life Society (DLS), on the bank of the Ganges at Shivanandanagar, at a distance of 3 kilometres from Rishikesh. Sivananda Yoga, the yoga form propagated by him, is now spread in many parts of the world through Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, but these centres are not affiliated with Swami Sivananda's original ashrams which are run by the Divine Life Society.

A lot of information on meditation and overcoming problems with concentration. I'm sure that the book was cobbled together from talks and articles as some chapters contradict each other in detail. e.g. it defines Brahmamuhurta as two hours before dawn in one chapter and four hours in another. That being said, there's a lot of valuable substance.
Swami Sivananda was an advaita vedantin (non-dualist). However it was not 'dry lip vedanta' that he practised and preached, but a dynamic practice of vedanta in daily life. In this book vedanta is explained in simple language with many homely illustrations and stories from the Upanishads, etc., so that the reader gets a clear understanding of the subject. Intricate points of vedanta are also thoroughly covered: but Swami Sivananda does not allow the reader to settle for intellectual show more knowledge alone. In his inimitable way he seasons what could have been a dry and technical book with the enthusiasm and soul-force of one who has mastered the subject and experienced its fruits. show less

This is an ideal work in the sense that it answers to all types of temperaments that are inclined to the spiritual path. It seeks to dispel the pet notions which glamour Yoga as something weird and sensational. It presents a great science in a very simple, lucid manner, while expertly analyzing the different aspects through a comprehensive outlook.
