Much of the allure of a poet is the mystery surrounding his or her origins, and the circumstances and experiences which molded their particular perspective of the world. Tricia and David Porter's collection of poems and images from Gerard Manley Hopkins, helps to explore the “bent world” that he describes. This book follows the locations, experiences, education, and perspective of Hopkins as he crafts some of his most inspiring works. While my copy had pictures that were in black and show more white, and I have a complete collection of all of his work, I often find myself returning to this copy, to remind myself of the context of his creative poetic vision. Explanations and pictures of the places he frequented and wrote his poetry give the reader a better understanding of the rich world his poetry sprung from. show less
Malcolm Muggeridge, intellectual, writer, journalist, broadcaster journeys from a devout agnostic to a committed Christian. David Porter, evangelical, free-lance writer interviews him at the age of 80 shortly after Muggeridge and his wife embrace the Catholic Church. We hear Muggeridge on God, Jesus Christ, the Bible, prayer, the church, sin, evil, suffering and dying. A transcription of the interview forms the basis of the book with intermittent connecting thoughts by Mr. Porter.
