A scholarly yet readable history that connects the Women's Rights Movement to women's activities during World War I. One chapter devoted to the peace movement during WWI, another looks at women's war activities both on the homefront and overseas.
Now a rare out of print book. Covers women who went overseas with the AEF during WWI. Excellent scholarly work that uses numerous primary sources. Covers Red Cross, Army ad Navy nurses, civilian women doctors, Signal Corps women, the YMCA/YWCA, the Salvation Army, African American women, novelists and reporters.
When the Schneider's wrote this book in the late 1980s, women made up 11% of the Armed Forces. The authors wanted to discover how women were fitting into the military after a decade of the All Volunteer Force. To do that, they spoke with more than 300 servicewomen in the Army, Navy, Air Force Coast Guard and Marines. The authors have combined these oral histories with official surveys and statistics to achieve a more colorful, personalized and informative picture of women in the military show more than otherwise available. show less
This is a scholarly book about women attempting to break into a profession that was a hierarchial bulwark of male authority - much like the military. The book will be read by researchers seeking parallels between military women and cergywomen - however the book does not specifically mention clergywomen of the Armed Forces.
