C. S. Lewis (Anthony Hopkins), the renowned author of "The Chronicles of Narnia" series, is a bachelor and Oxford University professor who spends his free time debating with fellow academics at a pub. Although he seems entirely uninterested in love, Lewis agrees to marry Joy Gresham (Debra Winger), an American writer who is looking to secure British citizenship. Their arrangement soon becomes a romance, and, when Joy is diagnosed with terminal cancer, their bond grows even stronger.
An engaging fantasy novel which will grip your interest from the very beginning. This scintillating adventure by Sarah Read encourages readers to abandon their previous conceptions of science-fiction. Written with the 'reluctant reader' in mind, this shorter novel allows you to engage with the characters in a manageable format without detriment to the imagination.
Hathonia; the perfect place to live. That is, until the Shadows come - until the flames start to move in strange patterns, until show more one woman hears the call from the land of the Shadows. As Alexis and Simone attempt to strive to understand the changes in their homeland they begin to realise that the answers all lie in the Shadowlands. show less
Substance: The story of the friendship-marriage-love affair of C.S. (Jack) Lewis, the renowned writer and professor, and Joy Gresham, and American divorcee. As the blurb says, "she awakens him to deep emotions he has written about, but never experienced...Lewis must confront a terrible truth: that a heart awakened to great love is also opened to great pain."
Based on Lewis autobiographical "Surprised by Joy" (pun intended) and the memoirs of Joy's son Douglas, who was raised by Lewis after show more her death from cancer.
Style: Typical "British" low-key, scenic, and theatric rather than cinematic script.
