Forest Walking is a wonderful primer on how to enjoy the forest around you, especially the trees. The author, Peter Wohlleben, a forester, does a wonderful job of explaining the inner workings of trees from their roots to their leaves in an accessible way, giving the reader simple tools to observe and appreciate their surroundings. In addition, there are amazing insights into tree biology and behavior such as wood fibres in trees being arranged in spiral patterns in order to bend more easily show more in high winds. The author also states "Trees, like us, are individuals, and have some slightly different ways of doing things." After learning about trees, the information covers basic forest ecology including fungi, mosses, lichens, and animals. I particularly enjoyed the sections on simple things to do in the forest to better connect with nature. show less
There was nothing in this book that I hadn't known already, but it was a very nice journey of rediscovery. If you are a seasoned outdoorsman, you will not stand to gain any new insight from this. The one who would benefit greatly from this book is the forest newbie. It is packed with great information one would need to understand the well-being and nature of our forests. It's nice to reconnect with nature with books like this to bring you back to the beginning, as a reminder of things you show more may take for granted. The more experienced you become with our forests, sometimes you lose what is considered as the basics. This book reels you back in with that base-level knowledge.
In an age where human beings have lost their ear to listen to nature and have forgotten how to feel our ancient connections with the Earth, "Forest Walking" is a good book to help re-open your eyes and teaches you how to hear our world around us through the trees and the very ground that gives them life.
Very touching and healing for those who want to reestablish a connection to the world we take so much for granted. show less

An interesting and beguiling read. I had already read [The Hidden Life of Trees] and this is equally appealing. It shows how the various aspects of nature enhance one another, You do feel you are walking with author on his journey though the book. How trees change during the seasons and also through their lifetimes.Forests are different and their ecology reflects this.
This seems to be the ideal book for our young patron's who are looking for real information about being a princess. It details such things as the frustration the royals must cope with as they are being hounded by the press. The author's note lists websites that keep track of the royalty. Although the primary focus is on Prince William and Prince Harry, the book supplies details about by-gone royalty, royalty in other countries and even ghosts. Certainly a fascinating read with all sorts of show more interesting anecdotes. show less
