I've tried to use this guide a couple of times while in the car, whizzing by the areas described at 55 mph. It really doesn't work well that way. I suspect the way to approach it is to either a: take it on the secondary roads where you can stop and look at things, or, b: read it before going and make notes of the kind of things to look for. New York has great geology that's worth looking into.
Most kids in my college geology department had this book. It is a useful and informative guide that has led to many fun excursions. We bought more in the series for states we lived in later, but this was the first.
