It was a cute story - an old house covered with snow, a group of really nice children, two dogs and a mystery; a bit old-fashioned, but I enjoyed it a lot.
With this book, as with so many I loved as a child, it's not really the plot but the atmosphere of the book. The plot is simple---a group of children go to a candy shop after school on the last day of school and buy their favorite candies. Eating the candy transports them to their futures for a minute. But it's so much more---the Gorey illustrations and the author's tone make you feel like a portal has been opened for a moment to a place where anything is possible, good or bad. Incredible book.
It was fun, although may be disturbing for cat-lovers - I wouldn't give it to sensitive children at all. It was illustrated by Paul Galdone and I really loved the pictures. Three and a half stars.
This book is a gem. it really captures the feeling of snow and playing in it and watching it come down. Also it is a witty entry in a genre of kid's books that can often be too dull. I re-read this book. it is perfect for a rainy afternoon.
