This is abook I have known almost as I long as I can read. How strange its influence on my image of London, a city I have never visited, nor probably ever shall. SAnd all the strange -- and often grizzly anecdotes -- adduced here pouring into the head of a youngster with little knowledge or history, and none of the mighty tradition of English literature. To some extent, I suppose that is irrelevant,as I don't need to have been there to know that London has changed immensely in the decades show more since this book. A good read, but more, another banquet of painting from the gifted water-colourist Haslehust. show less
These are the most exquisite little books -- descriptions of a landscape and time that are long erased by the convulsions of modern development. The paintings of E.W. Haslehust alone are worth seeing.
1. The Big Book of Fairy Tales holds true to the rule, that sometimes - the oldest fairy tales are the best! Here is a collection of some of the finest stories from around the globe, including classics from Arabian Nights such as 'Aladdin' and 'Sinbad the Sailor', Hans Christian Andersen's best work with 'The Ugly Ducking', 'Little Tin Soldier' and 'The Little Match girl' as well as the archetypal tales from Charles Perrault including 'Blue Beard', 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Puss in Boots.' show more Other tales with less well known literary lineages, such as 'Dick Whittington' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk' are also encompassed for the reader's enjoyment. These stories in this Big Book of Fairy Tales are accompanied by a set of dazzling illustrations from a true master of the 'Golden Age of Illustration' - Charles Robinson (1870-1937). An active painter in his own right, and brother of the famous Thomas and William Heath Robinson, his illustrations still delight both young and old over a century later. Robinson started his illustrative career with 100 pen and ink drawings for A Child's Garden of Verses (1895). The book was an instant hit, and from that point onwards, Robinson continued to illustrate fairy tales and children's books - with his characteristic style of subtle line, combined with delicate watercolours. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's literature - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children's stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors. Source: 2014 Read Books edition

2. A rich collection of well-known fairy tales, this magnificently illustrated hardcover volume will add a keepsake treasure to the family library. Thirty stories recount the adventures of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Bears, The Ugly Duckling, Aladdin, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpel-stilts-kin, The Frog Prince, and many other beloved characters. Storytellers include Aesop, Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Robert Southey as well as anonymous sources. Golden Age pioneer Charles Robinson provides nearly 200 illustrations including 34 full-page images — 12 in full color, 16 in black and red, and 6 in black and white — in addition to scores of smaller line drawings.
