S. Walden

I was warned. So, only fair to pass the warning along. This novel does not end with a HEA. It ends up breaking your heart for Emma and Anton. Their start is rocky. Two very different people purposely thrown together for a final senior project. In the process of writing a group paper, each character has to learn about each other culturally. What wasn't in the project outline was for them to fall in love.

"You're a senior. Know what I mean? It's time to grow up and deal with it. And when I say show more 'it' I mean, well, everything."

Emma and Anton go through everything. I mean everything. A rich white girl befriending a poor black boy is already tough enough. They have partial support of family and friends. And then there are others who feel that their relationship should never be. I loved both Emma and Anton. They tried so hard to strong. To want what they wanted no matter the odds were against them. They both fumble, yet learn how to be with the other. But it's not enough. The writing is done in third person POV that is often hard to get right in flow. I felt that Ms. Walden nailed the pace and dialogue of the characters. You really could feel and know where they were coming from. I gave the novel a .5 star deduction as I have to agree with a few other reviewers. The concluding chapters left me with a lot of questions unanswered and felt a bit rushed. However, the epilogue does attempt to give you closure - not the closure you want - but some closure.

This was a first time novel read from this author. I was very impressed with the storyline and writing. I really look forward to reading more from her. If you are looking for something different. Maybe a bit raw and real, this story is for you. You've been warned- be prepared for tissues.

Lo lei hace bastante y recien hoy me acorde de esta Guia para predadores sexuales en la secundaria que se hace llamar romance .

Esto es un horror . No solo por lo terriblemente INAPROPIADO (y casi diria perverso) de las escenas de sexo (y todo lo que envuelve la relacion principal) , sino tambien por las nociones ridiculas que la autora obviamente tiene acerca de la adolescencia y las drogas .

Primero lo primero : el profesor (el interes "romantico") es un asco ; un personaje realmente show more asqueroso , con todas las caracteristicas que se le pueden atribuir a un pervertido sexual . No solo seduce descaradamente a la menor de edad (conciente de que es su alumna en todo momento , no como otros libros del estilo de SLAMMED y THE LOW NOTES que son mucho mas melosos y preferibles a esta historia) ; es decir , no solo le coquetea a esta piba de 17 años en pleno salon escolar , sino que ademas lo festeja . MI nivel de indignacion llego hasta la nave ENterprise , saludo al capitan Picard y siguio de largo por la frontera final cuando en una escena , muy irresponsablemente , el PROFE (yo quiero hacerte las cosas mas sucias de forma elegante , cantaba MIranda , solo que aca la elegancia hizo mutis por el foro) , muy haciendose el canchero este viejo asqueroso , lleva a la MENOR a un boliche y cuando la presenta a uno de sus amigotes (que en la vida real seria uno de esos giles de 21 años que van a buscar novias de quince años para desvirgarlas en telos de mala muerte y despues seguir de largo ) , el amigote en cuestion se da cuenta de que es , en efecto , 'una MENOR y , saben que hace ? saben que escribe la autora???? LO FELICITA ! Y el PROFE , le CHOCA LOS CINCO!! Ja! Mirennos , somos tan geniales , mirenme , tengo una menor esperandome en la cama , soy tan canchero y esta novela es TAAAAN ROMANTICA y nosotros TAAAAN SOÑADOS que nos escriben asi , riendonos como idiotas porque estamos corrompiendo menores ..

Hace un tiempo estaba discutiendo con una conocida sobre LOLITA y no se que novela o serie de la tele con un tema parecido . ESta persona me decia que no podia entender como me gustaba tanto LOLITA pero me indignaba viendo una escena "romantica" entre una menor y un tipo grande en otro lado . No comprendia la diferencia . Le conteste esto : ES una cuestion de contexto y desarrollo . LOLITA es una obra maestra de la Literatura ; SI , es sobre un pedofilo y todo lo vivimos a traves de su punto de vista , pero NABOKOV es tan genial que da cuenta de todas las atrocidades de esta bestia detalle por detalle sin juzgar ; o sea , esta en nosotros descifrar el sentido de la novela entera . Nosotros despues vamos a ver que hacer con lo que leimos porque el autor no va a estar a cada rato diciendo ESTO ESTA MAL ESTO ES HORRIBLE . Ahi para mi esta la gran diferencia , la genialidad . El autor se desprende de la historia y deja su lugar a HUMBERT HUMBERT ; que el personaje haga lo que quiera , que cuente como es , que no escuche moral ni vea sus errores , que se haga creer a si mismo que DOlores HAze lo ama y le correspone . ESte profesor en cuestion nos quiere hacer creer a los lectores que todo lo ha hecho por amor y si , le creemos , porque HH es un desquiciado ; le creemos que el cree que ama y daña por amor , pero eso no nos ciega a nosotros , como lectores , de ver que lo que hace es una atrocidad ; por mas que el narrador diga lo que diga , por mas poesia (y que poesia!) que le encaje a la violacion ,nosotros sabemos cual es la realidad , sabemos quien sufre , donde esta el daño mayor .

Que , obviamente y lejos , muy lejos , no pasa con GOOD , ni pasa con la telenovela sobre la que hablaba yo aquella vez .

Good trata de convencerte de que esta perversion del fulano abusador es amor . QUe es "oscuro" y "disfuncional" pero es amor ; un amor tan apasionado que va mas alla de la familia y las amistades , mas alla de las leyes (?) y la responsabilidad del adulto ... ESta es la peor manera de excusar la perversion , esto es lo que esta mal , aca esta la GRAN DIFERENCIA entre Nabokov y el resto de los mortales . No son los personajes , no es la ficcion quien quiere convencer al lector de que esto es amor . Es la propia autora quien se pone en ese rol , quien juega al abogado del diablo . La autora esta presente en todas las perversidades , alentando y apoyando a los personajes en todos sus errores . SE usa al "amor" y al "romance disfuncial" como excusa para todo lo malo que pasa en la novela . QUe amor??? DE.que.amor.me.estas.hablando.MAtias?? QUe romance??? ES imposible llamar a esta barbaridad "romance" . Es perturbador leer los monologos de la protagonista : suena como una piba de quince años en un capitulo y en el siguiente esta siendo manoseada por su profesor como si no fuese nada del otro mundo . En serio esto es romance??? Es muuuy peligroso meterse en ese tema sin saber de lo que estas hablando .

ME fui por las ramas , pero la indignacion me puede a veces .

El otro tema que queria mencionar era el tema de las drogas . La protagonista termino en la carcel por robo a mano armada bajo la influencia de la drogas (no recuerdo cuales eran , creo que cocaina) ; es asi : la piba era una estudiante-puro-diez y muuuuuy religiosa hasta que un dia , UNA NOCHE en una fiesta se le dio por probar drogas por PRIMERA VEZ en su vida y BAM!!!!! sintio una necesidad imperante de salir a robar . QUE ES ESTO?? DOnde vivio esta autora toda su vida? SAbe algo de las drogas y sus efectos? Conoce las diferencias entre unas y otras? . Por mas "drogas" (porque se le da un sentido tan amplio que ni siquiera se sabe de que drogas se habla .... ) que tomes , vas a seguir siendo la misma persona que sos --las drogas no te cambian de una hora a otra ; si te fumas un porro , te vas a reir como un nabo -como mucho si te zarpas , te vas a sentir que estas soñando o vas a estar el triple de lento , no vas a salir a apuntar con un arma a nadie . Vas a ser vos , bueno como seas o malo como seas .

A lo que voy es esto : el culpar a las "drogas" por una cagada que se mando alguien no tiene sentido ; uno es como es y por eso la idea de la autora (muy al estilo de GO ASK ALICE ) de que todo es perfecto y dios te ama hasta que un dia CHAN! te fumaste un porro (NOOOOOOO! COUGH COUGH odio a todo el mundo DAME MAS) y saliste a matar porque si ... es una idea patetica , pretenciosa y me suena a discurso de cura sobre la juventud degenerada y blablaba ...

NO GRACIAS . Ya tengo bastante con los testigos de jehova que mevienen a golpear la puerta a cualquier hora .

Evitenla . No recuerdo que tenga algo rescatable .

Es tambien una de esas novelas con el sindrome del padre ausente , aunque en realidad tiene mas del virus de los padres no entienden nada y no saben un carajo del amor asi que mas me vale odiarlos y del trastorno todos los padres son malos . Como de costumbre en las novelas para adolescentes , las figuras paternas y maternas no existen y/o son malevolas ... En este caso , estas figuras son terribles , padres sobreprotectores y golpeadores , asi que tiene todos los problemas juntos . show less

Author S. Waden really knows how to push the moral envelope~ I felt like the relationship between Mark & Candace was wrong because it was a student/teacher but reading the book I couldn't commit to it being wrong because it really was so right- it makes no sense does it? it should be black and white but it is so many shades of gray it's ridiculous. Lots of funny moments, Candace has no filter sometimes. Mark well he's a hot young hip teacher. All the sneaking around put me on edge waiting show more for it all to fall apart and when it did the book ending in a cliff hanger- not a 'are they together or not' cliff hanger but 'OMG what are they going to do now' cliff hanger!

Honeysuckle Love by S. Walden

First I have to say that this story Honeysuckle Love by S. Walden was fantastic, it is well written, heartbreaking, emotional, and tragic and of course you have to add Love. Honeysuckle Love is a very hard book to put down and I will say I didn’t stop reading it till I knew how the story ended. S. Walden makes you feel emotions with her words and truly end up caring for Clara, praying throughout the novel that things are going to turn around for her and her show more sister.

We meet Clara and Beatrice and find out right away that their mother has left them, Clara is not really sure where her mom went but she does believe she will return eventually. So for now they must not tell anyone they are on their own, and Clara somehow has to keep things a float. We see Clara trying to pay the bills, buy food for her and her sister and pray the electricity doesn’t get cut off.

Meanwhile she still has to attend high school and work part-time. Here is where we first meet Evan who likes Clara and in his haste to get to know her he turns her life upside down and not always for the good.

I have to say that I loved Clara’s younger sister Beatrice, her character made me laugh at times thinking back to my younger sister it was heart warming.

This novel Honeysuckle Love is a fantastic story about love, loss, depression and mental illness and you are reminded how when you’re struggling and can’t always see a way out and how making a bad decision sometimes feels like the only choice you have.

S. Walden is an incredible author and writes a story that makes you shed a few tears, and it was quite shocking at times, but one thing you have to give Clara is she never really gave up trying. I have rated Honeysuckle Love a 4 star rating and would recommend anyone who reads this review to go purchase this novel as it’s a fantastic story. show less
