A very fast and enjoyable read and a well constructed novel. Part way through the book,I felt the plot simplistic evidenced, to me, in that the text is mainly dialog with little descriptive narrative. Having read complex, moody, and deep who done its recently it took me a while to come to the conclusion this is indeed a strength in this book. A simple and breezy story that's a bit like a TV mystery. The characters are also simple without the often customary deep flaws and psychological show more problems.Deus in mechana". Nice to see Montreal featured in a book and taking a role.

A fast and enjoyable if not too challenging a read.

False Impressions is a top rate mystery/thriller, set in picturesque Montreal. I thoroughly enjoyed the way Nikolai used the characters in her story. She introduced them like paintings in an art gallery, letting me focus on which one to choose. Thus, the dilemma, which one? She sprinkled in just enough information throughout to keep me guessing, then tied it up all very neatly at the end. I highly recommend this expertly produced mystery, and cannot wait to read her next offering Fatal show more Whispers. Congratulations Ms Nikolai on a very well written novel. show less
amateur-sleuth, crime-fiction, thriller, relationships, suspense, investigation, journalist, psychological, murder, conspiracy, drugs-issues, prep-school*****

Winter in the frozen North where an expensive boarding school is having more problems than the bad weather. Megan is a ghostwriter with an investigative journalist as a partner, Michael. They're at the school so that Michael can give a talk on investigative reporting at the request of his old friend. What they find is evidence of murder show more with a cover up, drugs issues, and a winter storm that totally isolates without hope of inviting law enforcement. together they work through all the clues and threats to THEIR personal safety. Great story with lots of suspense!
Kelli Tager has a pleasant voice that is clear and well modulated but her attempts at male voices is less than optimal but she does an excellent job with the females and also with character differentiation.

Ghostwriter Megan Scott and investigative reporter Michael Elliott from Montreal travel to Portland, Maine to visit Megan's cousin and get caught up in investigating the first murder. The publisher's blurb is actually a pretty good hook so I won't go there or do the spoiler thing. The story is fast paced, with tight narrative, a real page turner, suspenseful, and with lots of twists and red show more herrings. Great read! Don't worry about it being of a series, the author has that covered.
Kelli Tager is remarkable as the narrator of this story with so many interesting characters!
