Justin Lee comes from a loving Southern Baptist family and was so religious that he was nicknamed 'God Boy' at school. There was just one problem, he's attracted to men, not women.
He describes his struggles to come to terms with his sexuality in a way which was true to his sense of integrity in an engaging style which kept me turning the pages. I didn't really find anything new in the arguments back and forth, though I was saddened and outraged by the way he was sometimes treated. As he show more says, what he's an expert in is his experience and his story, and it's well worth reading. Trouble is, I suspect those who would most benefit from it won't read it. show less

Loved this book but it was not what I expected. It is a beautifully written memoir from both sides of the war between gays and the church, written by a young man who straddles both sides. He does not push the agenda of either side (that's what I was expecting). Instead, he attempts to become a bridge between the two. He explains where both sides come from, based on his own experience and a lot of research. He also shows amazing grace (ha!) when he recalls unpleasant experiences he endured show more from both fellow Christians and members of the LBGT community. These negative experiences are tempered with inspiring stories of love and acceptance he received from both groups. It's a book that people on all sides of this issue should read because getting to know how people who are different from us live/think/believe is a great way to bring us all together. show less
I heard that every Christian should read this book and I now agree wholeheartedly. I don’t think you can read Justin’s story without being moved to compassion. I tend to believe that the best thing we can do to grow in love is to listen to the stories of those who are different from us. If there isn’t room for diversity in the church, then we are failing at embracing the beauty of God within each human heart. Justin’s book was a reminder that there are real people behind every show more argument within the church. show less
