This is a lovely book highlighting some of children's illustrators well known works. I very much like the style of the book which highlights the artists with a description of how they create their works, then a folded flip page of their self portrait. Well written and endearing.

Highly recommended for those, like me who enjoy children's illustrated books.

Artist to Artist is an amazing collection of 23 successful children’s book illustrators/authors giving encouragement and advice to children. Authors like Eric Carle, Tomi dePaola, Leo Lionni, Maurice Sendak, and Chris Van Allsburg share words of wisdom in a letter format. Also included are photos of the professional artists as children and an artistic self-portrait as well as a fold-out page containing multiple show more colorful examples of each artist’s work. A wonderfully intimate method of teaching children about art, artists, authors, book illustration, and the variety in creative processes. The fold-out pages make it more interactive for the child and the portraits help them identify each artist/author.

Although my three year old is a bit young for this book, she enjoyed folding out the pages and looking at the colorful illustrations. This is one I would love to have in my own personal library as a wonderful reference. I am anxious to see if this becomes a series since there are so many wonderful picture book artists out there. The proceeds of the book go to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.

Ages elementary-adult.

This unique anthology shares the personal stories, inspirations, and motivations of twenty-three artists whose illustrations grace the pages of the most admired children’s picture books. Written as informal letters addressed to children, each illustrator shares insight into their creative minds along with how they began their journey as artists. Foldout pages withhold photographs of their youth, artwork from their childhood, familiar pictures as works-in-progress, and snapshots of their show more studios or workspaces. In addition, each letter is complete with a self-portrait, portraying how the artist sees themselves through their own art. While written to a young audience, anyone who appreciates art will find this read with a glimpse into the life and mind of renowned artists to be engaging. Rather than an instructional “how to” book, Artist to Artist holds encouraging messages worthwhile to share with budding young artists. show less
23 illustrators of picture books talk to children about their start as artists. The left hand side of each page is a letter from the artist discussing their childhood love of art, their early works and how they decided to make art their career. The right hand page features a self portrait of the artist. This page opens over to a double page with examples of their art, photos or sketches of their process and pictures of their studio. I especially liked getting to see where the artists show more work.
This is a wonderful book for children interested in art.
