This book was published in 1967... goodness, is that really FIFTY years ago??? The age definitely shows... but it's still a decent book for kids (around 3rd to 6th grade) with just a touch of magic, in the form of a filling in his tooth that gives Elbert the power to read people's minds.
The protagonist is believable, as his eventual success in the book comes from his knowledge and hard practice, not his magic. The filling also comes with limits, he has to brush his tooth to make the filling show more work. The author presented this touch of magic in a realistic way, instead of simply making things come easy as you see too often when people get magic. The ending was overall satisfactory, this was an easy read for me, and is appropriate for the aforementioned ages. show less

Another chance to see art from Mikolaycak. Marvelous: vibrant, exciting, fun. The story is very simple, and since it's from 1529 the author's note admits that the truth is not known. If your library doesn't have this, feel free to get you Mikolaycak fix elsewhere, but if it does, do check this out.
