I keep coming back to this obscure little gem (for some reason I tend to read it in the summer; go figure,) and it still makes me smile. It's not completely perfect, and is a little saccharine in parts, but it's still an unusual story, and the resolution was more than satisfying. I'm looking into more of Kingsley's work; she seems like the type of forgotten or semi-obscure author that I can get into.
Also, shout out to Project Gutenberg! They've been supplementing my reading for years now, show more and I can't get enough of them. Open access and public domain books FTW! show less

This classic children’s book is set in the final days of Christ’s ministry and resurrection, and many of the events are seen through the eyes of Tor, a young beggar boy. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. Tor was a plucky character and his devotion to Jesus was so sweet. I found some aspects of the story a little hard to swallow, and I didn’t like the author’s depiction of Peter. But these things didn’t really impede my enjoyment of the story. Although the author has handled show more some of the more graphic events in the story with tact and sensitivity, I don’t think the story would be particularly enjoyed by kids today. The language and story structure would be unfamiliar to most kids today. show less
